The Climate March 2015

The Climate March 2015 took place on the 29th of November 2015. The Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura with Rotractors Ruvindra and Osanda as Co-Chairs of the project organized the walk along with Earth Hour Sri Lanka, the Interact Club and the Prefect Guild of Zahira College which brought awareness on Global Climate Change and Environmental Issues.

Hundreds of participants were gathered near The Independence Square to take part in the walk. The participants carried boards and placards displaying words and quotes on climate change, the possibilities, steps that can be taken and future threats to the environment. Members of Environmental Clubs of School and National Level took part with ardor and enthusiasm. The walk reached the Open Auditorium at Vihara Maha Devi Park (passing Public Administration Junction, Maitland Crescent, Horton roundabout and Victoria Park) where environmentalists spoke to the public about the dire situations brought about by climate change. An impressive feature of the event was that it focused much on what changes, we should make in our country as Sri Lankans to create a better breathing atmosphere for everyone. What should be done to purify the air around us and the effects that would follow from the actions we take. Awards were presented for students and companies who contributed to make a huge impact on the environmental development of the country. Speeches were delivered both in Sinhala and English to convey the speciality in having allocated a day to reflect on climate change along with the entire world. Environmentalists brought out their ideas and information on saving energy, targets to be achieved and the importance of saving water resources throughout the country. They also pointed out that much attention should be directed to save water resources in rural dry zones, which is a fact most of us rarely think about.

An entertainment session wrapped up the event with songs sung by students on environmental and saving earth.
The walk assured that 100% clean environment is a target we all are in a position to achieve if we put our heart and strength in working towards this goal.
